Startup to manufacture solar-powered vessels | Bhubaneswar News
Bhubaneswar: An Odisha-based startup will manufacture solar-powered vessels for Odisha govt and others. This company signed an Investment Intention Form (IIF), a pre-MoU, with the state govt at the Utkarsh Odisha Conclave here on Wednesday, promising to invest Rs 120 crore in Odisha.
The company, Kalinga Vessels, headquartered in Bhubaneswar, develops and deploys a variety of water transport vessels powered by electricity and solar energy on rivers, lakes, and the sea.
“We have a manufacturing facility at Kochi. Now we have started working on creating facilities on the eastern coast. We manufactured 25-odd boats. Odisha govt is interested in procuring 50 boats from us,” said Akash Kumar Singh, co-founder and director of the startup.
He said they received land for the manufacturing facility at Khurda. “There are three categories of vessels. While the 5 to 25 seaters belong to the first category, 25 to 75 seaters come under the second category. The last category involves big fleets. For manufacturing the first category vessels, we have land at Khurda,” he added.
For building second category vessels, they want a big area. “For manufacturing big fleets, we have to set up a facility near the sea or river. We are manufacturing solar-powered vessels on our own. Our 30-passenger vessel, Nandighosh, is operating in Chilika. Our company supplied vessels to Kerala, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, and other places,” said Singh.
He said their manufacturing facility will provide jobs to local people. “We are planning to export our vessel to Malaysia. As the vessel is environment-friendly, it will help reduce water pollution and stop the burning of fossil fuels,” he added.
Singh said people love their vessels because of their design and style, environmental friendliness, safety, and operational efficiency. “Our vessel will float on water if the engine fails. It will stop the burning of barrels of diesel. It will not create high decibel sounds like diesel boats. Underwater marine creatures will not get disturbed during plying of this vessel,” he added.
