Special Teachers: State taking steps to appoint special teachers in schools | Bhubaneswar News
Bhubaneswar: The govt is taking steps to recruit special teachers in general school, in line with a Supreme Court directive.
Lack of special educators in schools across the state has led to a significant increase in the dropout rate of children with special needs (CWSN).
According to the information provided in the assembly, the number of children with special needs in Odisha was 92,611 in March 2023.However, by Aug 2024, this number had decreased to 82,671, indicating a worrying trend of children with special needs dropping out of school.
School and mass education minister Nityananda Gond said in a reply in the assembly that 632 block resource teachers (BRT) have been engaged in blocks while 1,136 special educators, after completing special education course at the Rehabilitation Council of India (RCI), have been appointed as special teachers in schools.
As per the RTE amendment, schools will have to appoint one special education teacher for every 10 children with disabilities studying in classes I to V and 15 children with disabilities studying in VI to VIII.
However, Odisha govt in its affidavit in the SC has mentioned that the state needs 6,573 special teacher posts in general schools.
“The govt will start the process of recruitment of special teachers soon,” said Gond in the House.
“It is crucial for the state government to prioritize the appointment of special educators in every general school to ensure that children with special needs receive the support they require to thrive academically and socially,” said Rakesh Kumar Sahoo, secretary of Odisha Special Educator Federation for Divyang (OSEFD).
“Besides, over 7,000 trained special teachers are waiting for jobs in the state,” he said.
