ECoR to set up solar power plants at 149 stns

Bhubaneswar: To harness the power of renewable energy, East Coast Railway (ECoR) will install solar power plants at 149 station buildings, 248 service buildings, 6,924 residential buildings, and 366 level-crossing gates in its jurisdiction. It has planned to install 21,826 KWp capacity solar plants, resulting in savings of approximately Rs 14 crore from the energy bill and Rs 91.41 lakh from carbon credits.
The railways have floated a tender worth Rs 83.79 crore for the installation of rooftop solar power plants in stations, service buildings, and other installations.
ECoR official sources said they get 6,790 KWp from the solar power plant installed at the ECoR headquarters building at Chandrasekharpur in the city.
According to sources, solar energy generating systems have already been installed at several level crossing gates under the ECoR jurisdiction.
“We are committed to maximising the use of solar energy to meet our energy requirements. This will help in meeting the day-to-day power needs of stations and other service buildings. Apart from being environmentally friendly, this leads to saving money for the railways,” said the ECoR official statement.
Additionally, ECoR’s carriage repair workshop at Mancheswar has installed a solar power plant to produce green energy to meet its power demand. The workshop has already installed solar panels on the rooftop of its administrative building. A railway official said the installation of solar power plants is a significant step towards reducing the carbon footprint of the railway system. “By generating electricity from renewable sources, ECoR will be able to reduce its dependence on fossil fuels and contribute to the green energy mission of the govt,” he added.
