Berhampur: Storm, a trained German Shepherd from Odisha police’s K9 squad who was taken to Kerala for rescue operation in the aftermath of the landslides in Wayanad on July 30, has sniffed out four bodies during the six-day operation.
Storm, along with a police team, including its master, started the search operation in Wayanad from Aug 6 upon the direction of Kerala police and completed it on Sunday. They will return to Odisha soon.
“The dog has detected four bodies which were buried under big stone slabs,” a police officer, who had accompanied Storm, said.
“As the area was full of mud following the landslides and incessant rain, the Kerala police could not access some areas,” B K Rao, a police officer who was in the team, said.
The seven-year-old sniffer dog was for the first time engaged in a search operation. “Though it was a challenging job, we are happy with its performance in such a massive disaster,” Storm’s master, Prahallad Nayak, said.
Storm was trained in search and rescue works in the canine and dog squad at Cuttack and the Border Security Force’s training centre in Gwalior for about eight and seven months, respectively.
“Often sniffer dogs are engaged in search and rescue operations,” a retired police officer said, adding, “Trained Labradors from the Army dog unit in Lucknow were engaged in rescue operation in Himachal Pradesh recently.”
