Smog fades, city breathes easy as air quality better

Mumbai: The surge in city’s daytime temperatures over the past fortnight has resulted in clearer skies owing to ‘satisfactory’ air quality index (AQI). This is because the daytime temperature renders the air lighter, thus increasing wind speed and facilitating smoke and dust dispersal, explained experts. Ameet Kole, a Jogeshwari resident who suffers from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, is happy to observe smoggy conditions dissipating. On most winter days, the city’s AQI is in the non-satisfactory category (101-200). “If the cooler and non-windy weather persists… it escalates to poor AQI (201-300) in suburbs, like Mankhurd, Chembur, BKC, Kurla, Mazgaon, and Colaba,” said a weather expert. tnn
