Slab of 3rd floor crashes, leaves gaping hole through lower storeys; two dead | Mumbai News – Times of India

MUMBAI: Two persons died after the flooring slab of a flat crashed, having a cascading effect on the lower floors of a 3-storey building in Vikhroli around 7 pm Thursday, leaving a gaping vertical hole within the structure. No other casualty has been reported.
The flooring of the living room of the third floor flat caved in on the second floor, whose slab in turn collapsed onto the first floor whose floor ultimately landed onto the ground floor, said Ketki Sangle, head of BJP Women’s Wing for Vikhroli.
The Mhada building, Gurukripa CHS, which is about 50 years old, is located in Kannamwar Nagar. It was supposed to be redeveloped, and it had been partially vacated.
Two people who were rescued from the rubble were taken to Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Hospital, where they were declared ‘brought dead’. The two deceased persons have been identified as Sharad Mhaslekar (75) who lived on the ground floor, and Suresh Madhalkar (78) who put up on the third, said former corporator Upendra Sawant.
According to Mhada officials, the building was to be redeveloped with two other buildings, but the process had been stalled due to differences among the residents. Nearly half of the residents had vacated the premises but 12 families had stayed put.
Mhada has given conveyance for the building. “It had been also given an NOC for redevelopment some time ago. Considering the condition of the building, a notice to vacate the premises had been given to the residents,” said Mhada public relations officer Vaishali Gadpale. “We are accommodating the 12 families who were residing in the building.”
