SJTA: SJTA to depute 12 officers for security | Bhubaneswar News

Bhubaneswar: The Shree Jagannath Temple Administration (SJTA) in Puri has decided to create a dedicated security wing under its administrative control.
The temple managing committee on Wednesday approved a proposal that would be sent to the state govt to depute 12 police officers — 2 DSPs, 4 inspectors and 6 sub-inspectors — in the SJTA, shrine’s chief administrator Vir Vikram Yadav said.
Currently, the SJTA has a permanent post of administrator (security) held by an ASP-ranked officer. The proposed creation of 12 cop posts in the SJTA is aimed at adding teeth to the security of the 12th century shrine.
While the overall safety and security of the Jagannath Temple lies with Odisha police, the shrine’s security wing mostly supervises the functioning of temple guards, who are known as Jagannath temple police (JTP).
JTP guards are not Odisha police personnel. They assist the police in crowd control inside the temple. JTP guards also coordinate with servitors and SJTA officials for the smooth conduct of rituals. “The proposed appointment of police officers would improve the services of JTP,” a senior temple official said.
Police sources said the existing number of personnel is inadequate to provide security to the temple, manage crowds and facilitate the darshan system.
