Bengaluru: Hebbal police have arrested six people, including four women, for robbing a bride-seeking man of over Rs 50,000.
The arrested are Harish, 40, and Venkatesh, 35, both autorickshaw drivers, and Geetha, 35, Vijaya, 60, Manjula, 30, and Leelavathi, 40. TOI had reported the incident in a report headlined ‘Man seeking bride robbed of Rs 50,000 by fake cops in Bengaluru‘ on Jan 28.
The victim, Satish (name changed), a real estate broker, had befriended Manjula when he was working as a bike-taxi captain two years ago. He sought her help in finding a suitable match for marriage. She advised him to visit Hebbal, where her friend would show him a bride. Believing her, Satish went and met Vijaya, who invited him to her house and introduced him to Leelavathi. Vijaya asked him for Rs 1,200 via a digital payment app to bring some household items, promising to return it on coming back.
While Satish was alone in the house with Leelavathi, Harish, Venkatesh, and Geetha barged in, claiming to be cops. They threatened to arrest Satish unless he paid them a bribe of Rs 2 lakh. Satish panicked and transferred Rs 51,000 to a digital payment account provided by the suspects.
He filed a complaint at Hebbal police station the same day. The arrested have been remanded in judicial custody.
