BMC to put up signages, make navigation easy

Bhubaneswar: To ensure the convenience of citizens as well as tourists and visitors to the city, the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) has planned to take up a mega signage erection project here soon.
The civic body has decided to erect different kinds of signages such as gantry signage, which is useful for commuters driving on the roads, junction signages aimed to identify different intersections of the city and road signages to identify roads in the city.
A one of its kind standee type signages will also be installed at strategic locations that will help the people navigate to important institutions while one more landmark signage will be put up to illustrate the story of establishment and growth of prominent locations in the city. “It is important to provide proper guidance to the people and tourists. The new signages will meet basic requirements such as fulfilling need, conveying a clear message and give adequate time of response to commuters,” said mayor Sulochana Das.
She said different kinds of signages have been put by BMC, works department and National Highway Authority of India at several places. There is no intention to alter the existing signages but to bring improved ones with the new project, the mayor said. The civic body has also identified the places where the new signages will be installed. According to the proposed plan, the north zone of the city will get 19 gantry signages, 86 junction signages, 41 road signages and six standee type signages.
Similarly, the southwest zone of the city will get 27 gantry signages, 128 junction signages, 34 road signages and six standee type signages while the south-east zone will have 45 gantry signages, 85 junction signages, 54 road signages and three standee type signages.
Official said the signages will be bilingual (Odia and English) format and reflect the aesthetic value of the city. The civic body has finalised the design for the landmark signages that will have the famous Mukteswara Temple art in its background and it will be lit with LEDs. Directional signages are very important, especially for people coming from outside.
