Sibling property dispute escalates into violent clash in city | Bhubaneswar News

Bhubaneswar: A property-related conflict between siblings sparked a serious law and order disturbance in Bhubaneswar’s Bharatpur locality during the early hours of Monday. The confrontation resulted in grievous injuries to the younger brother, Ashok Moharana, while three police personnel were also wounded while attempting to control the situation.
Ashok, 48, and his older brother, Surya, 51, were in dispute over their father’s property for quite some time. Ashok resided at the family property, while Surya lived elsewhere in the city. Around 2 am between Sunday and Monday, Surya arrived with his family members at the Bana Durga Sahi property where his father and younger brother resided, initiating a heated argument over property shares, culminating in an assault on Ashok.
During the confrontation, Surya allegedly severed Ashok’s right hand with a sharp weapon. Local residents informed police. All hell broke loose upon Bharatpur police’s arrival. Residents expressed anger towards Surya’s family for the attack. When police officers attempted to detain Surya and his relatives, locals assaulted the suspects despite police presence.
Residents prevented police from taking the suspects in their vehicle, insisting on administering mob justice to Surya. As Bharatpur police requested additional support and cautioned residents against attacking the suspects, the crowd became more aggressive. They assaulted police with bricks, bottles, and sticks, injuring additional inspector-in-charge Madhabananda Bastia, assistant sub-inspector Sanghamitra Kar, and driver Kartika Behera.
Local residents also blocked the police vehicle with wooden logs, preventing them from leaving the area. The intense standoff lasted about two hours until 4 am before additional forces arrived to control the situation. DCP Jagmohan Meena said two cases were registered: one regarding Surya’s family’s attack on Ashok, another concerning the assault on police officers.
“For the first case, we arrested Surya, his wife, their two sons, and two other family members on Monday. Efforts are on to arrest the culprits regarding the assault on our personnel, who are now stable after treatment,” Meena said. According to the DCP, the two siblings were in a scuffle on the property issue, leading to the registration of separate cases against them at Bharatpur police station on March 26.
