Shiv Sena MLA seeks action against Mumbai college for imposing dress code; dubs it ‘Talibani fatwa’ | Mumbai News – Times of India
MUMBAI: Shiv Sena MLA Pratap Sarnaik has called for action against the Chembur Trombay Education Society‘s N G Acharya and D K Marathe college for implementing a dress code banning students from wearing jeans and T-shirts.
The notice was issued on June 27 and prohibits torn jeans, T-shirts, revealing dresses, jerseys, or any attire that “reveals religion or shows cultural disparity.” Sarnaik referred to the notice as a “Talibani fatwa” and voiced his concerns in the assembly on Wednesday.
The college’s dress code policy requires students to wear formal and decent attire while on campus. More than 70-80 per cent of students wear jeans and jackets, Sarnaik said, questioning the practicality of the ban. He further added, “Will you ban a swimming suit for a swimming competition and T-shirts, shorts for sports competitions?”
Sarnaik urged the education minister to take action against the college authorities for what he termed as a “Talibani fatwa.” This sentiment followed a legal action last month by the college’s students.
They had approached the Bombay high court, challenging the directive which prohibited wearing hijab, naqab, burka, stoles, caps and badges inside the premises.
In its ruling on June 26, the Bombay high court upheld the college’s dress code, stating that it is intended to maintain discipline and is part of the college’s fundamental right to establish and administer an educational institution.
Following this court decision, the college issued a second notice, further expanding the dress code to include the ban on torn jeans and T-shirts.
This has led to considerable debate within the institution and among lawmakers. Sarnaik’s comments reflect a growing concern over the implications of such dress code policies on students’ rights and freedoms.
