Sewerage work leaves craters in city pockets, residents call for repair | Bhubaneswar News

Bhubaneswar: Residents of Unit III, Unit IX, Unit IV and Unit VIII, among others, are facing acute infrastructural issues due to the excavation work taken up in the narrow lanes of these areas for sewerage line laying work. The situation is worrisome at Unit IX, a central locality, where the work was taken up very recently. The residents alleged that after the excavation, the authorities did not properly level the lanes. “We live in one of the first planned localities of the city. The houses are very neatly lined up and the roads are quite well designed, but the excavation work right on the face of the lane has made things worse for us,” Unit IX resident Jitendra Dash said.Dash added that during the sewerage line laying work, the authorities didn’t use proper barricading of the construction site, putting people at risk, and now they have failed to properly level the lanes after filling them up with mud and sand. “This is absolutely irresponsible of the authority,” he said. The untimely rain, in the meantime, has made things worse for residents living in these areas. “The lanes have developed uneven surfaces after the haphazard levelling work. The rainwater is also making things worse for us,” Unit VIII resident Gitanjalee Behera said.City mayor Sulochana Das said, “We have received a few complaints from the residents. We have pursued the matter with the Water Corporation of Odisha (WATCO), which has taken up the sewerage line laying work in these areas. She added that WATCO was asked to instruct its contractors to complete the work properly. “These are the roads belonging to the civic body. We did provide the information for the digging, given the condition of its proper restoration,” Das said, while assuring that the lanes in these areas will be repaired very shortly.
