Berhampur: Continuing their special drive against anti-social elements and illegal firearms, Berhampur police on Saturday arrested seven more persons with criminal backgrounds.The arrests led to the seizure of four illegal pistols, a country-made air gun, over 40 live ammunition, five crude bombs, six empty magazines, six mobile phones, 22 ATM cards of various banks and cash amounting to over Rs 1.11 lakh.Berhampur SP Saravana Vivek M said five of the accused were arrested by Goshaninuagaon police, who also recovered a country-made pistol and five crude bombs. Baidyanathpur police arrested two others and seized three illegal pistols, six empty magazines and 34 live rounds from them. The arrested individuals hail from different areas of Ganjam and Khurda districts and have past records of anti-social activities. In the past month, Ganjam and Berhampur police have arrested at least 65 anti-social elements and seized 42 illegal pistols and over 150 live ammunition. Ganjam police alone arrested 38 persons and recovered 32 firearms, while Berhampur police arrested 17 people and seized 10 firearms. SP Vivek said the crackdown will continue in a sustained manner to curb the circulation of illegal weapons and bring the culprits to justice. Detailed investigation is underway. A special police team has been formed to trace the source of these firearms. Preliminary investigation indicates that some of the seized pistols were procured from Munger in Bihar, a known hub for illegal arms.
