Sena (UBT) picks Jadhav for leader of opposition | Mumbai News – The Times of India

Mumbai: The Shiv Sena (UBT) has finalised the name of MLA Bhaskar Jadhav for the position of leader of the opposition in the assembly.
The party letter naming Jadhav and staking claim to the post was given to assembly speaker Rahul Narwekar on Tuesday, signed by Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray.
Thackeray visited the legislature, spoke to Shiv Sena (UBT) MLAs, and met NCP (SP) MLAs Jitendra Awhad and Jayant Patil, among other MVA politicians. Shiv Sena (UBT) MLAs, led by Aaditya Thackeray, also met Narwekar.
Thackeray said the MVA would remain together. He stated that the speaker must decide on the leader of the opposition before the budget is presented on March 10. “A decision must be taken at the earliest. There is no 2.5-year formula for sharing the post,” he said.
The letter stated that a resolution was passed in the party members’ meeting held on Feb 28 giving all authority to decide the name of the leader of the opposition to Uddhav Thackeray.
“Pursuant to the resolution, for the post of leader of the opposition in the legislative assembly, I am recommending the name of Bhaskar Jadhav. It is requested that the said recommendation be accepted,” Uddhav Thackeray said in his letter to Narwekar.
The legislature secretariat had informed the Shiv Sena (UBT) that there is no specific rule for the appointment of the leader of the opposition, and the speaker makes a decision using his authority, guided by parliamentary tradition and convention.
In a reply to Jadhav, the legislature secretariat stated that there is no rule mandating that the opposition party claiming the post must have at least 10% of the total MLAs.
The Congress has now said that since Shiv Sena (UBT) is getting the post of leader of the opposition in the assembly as it is the biggest opposition party with 20 MLAs, the Congress must get the post of leader of the opposition in the legislative council since it had the maximum MLCs in the opposition. Currently, Shiv Sena (UBT)’s Ambadas Danve is the leader of the opposition in the council.
Narwekar has maintained that he will check the rules of the assembly, previous conventions and traditions, and then take an appropriate decision on the leader of the opposition.
