Bhubaneswar: Several civil society organisations (CSO)s have urged the govt to increase the supply of green gram, black gram and horse gram seeds and distribute them for free under the rice fallow management scheme.
The scheme encourages farmers to cultivate crops on land that would otherwise remain dormant during rabi season. Currently, the govt allocates 8kg of complimentary seeds to farmers under the programme.
However, the CSOs said that supplying a minimum of 10 kg of seeds would significantly benefit the farmers, who have been persistently advocating for this increase for a considerable period from different parts of the state.Despite repeated attempts, calls to the agriculture department went unanswered.
The CSOs, namely Odisha Shramajeebee Manch and Mahila Shramajeebee Manch Odisha, two prominent state-level people’s organizations, have conducted an extensive survey to evaluate the efficacy of the govt scheme.

Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan stated that the previous UPA government had refused to offer a 50% profit margin on the cost for farmers in the minimum support price as recommended by the Swaminathan Commission. He highlighted that the current Modi-led government has implemented this recommendation, contrary to the UPA’s decision, citing historic refusals from Congress ministers.
