Bhubaneswar: Early detection and immediate treatment can prevent major complications in scrub patients, said director of public health, Nilakantha Mishra.
Scrub typhus is a bacterial disease which is transmitted to humans through the bite of infected chiggers or larval mites.
Mishra said people who spend a lot of time in fields or forests, such as farmers, hikers and campers, are vulnerable to scrub typhus.He said the best way to prevent being bitten by mites is to wear protective clothing, such as long-sleeved shirts and long pants, when working or spending time outdoors.
“If a person suspects they have been bitten by an infected mite and are experiencing symptoms of scrub typhus, they should seek medical attention immediately. Early diagnosis and treatment with antibiotics can help prevent complications and speed up recovery,” he added.
“Three scrub typhus deaths have been reported from Bargarh district. We are verifying data to determine whether they died of scrub typhus. Sporadic cases are being reported from different parts of the state. We have testing facilities in each district. The district headquarters hospitals can diagnose and treat the patients,” said Mishra.
Dr Jayant Kumar Panda, professor of general medicine, SCB Medical College and Hospital, Cuttack, said people normally don’t take mite bites seriously initially and approach a doctor after facing complications. “The disease is caused by the bite of an infected chigger or mite. It is very small. The person may not even realise they have been bitten. The symptoms start appearing 5-14 days after the bite,” he added.
He said symptoms of scrub typhus included fever, headache, body ache and rashes. “In severe cases, the disease can lead to complications such as pneumonia, meningitis and kidney problems. If left untreated, it can be fatal,” said Panda.
More than 50 scrub typhus cases have been reported in Bargarh and Kendrapada districts. Sporadic cases have been reported from other districts too. Govt officials said necessary measures are being taken to create awareness about the disease.
