Schools Reopening: District Collectors to Decide on Reopening of Schools Based on Weather Forecast | Bhubaneswar News
Bhubaneswar: In the wake of searing heatwave conditions prevailing in several districts of Odisha, the state govt on Monday asked all district collectors to take a call on reopening of schools after summer vacation, based on the weather forecast.
Ten districts, including Ganjam, Bhadrak, Sambalpur, Nuapada, Balangir, Sonepur and Bargarh districts have decided to extend the summer vacation till June 20.On the other hand, collectors in other districts have decided to have morning classes and reschedule the school timing from 6.30am to 10.30am. Nabarangpur district has extended morning classes till June 22. The revised timings will be applicable for all schools from Classes I to XII.
“Based on the prevalent weather conditions in various districts respective collectors will decide whether the schools will remain closed or there is a need for rescheduling the school timing. These temporary arrangements in schools will continue till June 20, after which the decision will be reviewed again,” said school and mass education minister Nityananda Gond.
In Balasore and Kendrapada districts, schools will remain closed on Tuesday but there will be morning classes from Wednesday, June 19, official sources said.
Odisha has been experiencing a harsher and prolonged summer this year with more heatwave days. The state has reported 159 suspected sunstroke deaths by June 10 of which the govt has confirmed 41 deaths due to heatstroke so far this year.
As per the forecast of India Meteorological Department (IMD), hot and humid conditions will continue in districts of Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khordha, Nayagarh, Ganjam and Gajapati.
“Hot and humid conditions will continue in most parts of the state till June 20 after which rainfall activities may increase in some parts,” said Manorama Mohanty, director of IMD’s Bhubaneswar Centre.
