Another Saran bridge caves in, 10th collapse in 16 days

Chhapra: Yet another bridge collapsed in Saran district on Thursday, marking the 10th such incident in the state in 16 days. Saran DM Aman Samir said the latest incident was the third such collapse in the district in the last 24 hours. “A high-level probe has been ordered to find out reasons for the collapse of these small bridges in the district,” he said.
The latest collapse occurred at Sareya village under Baniapur block in Saran district. The bridge, built over the Gandaki river, collapsed in the morning, disconnecting about a dozen villages. Locals said the bridge, constructed five years ago under MGNREGA, had been vital for connecting the villages of Sareya and Satua panchayats.
Saran DM inspected the damaged bridge and directed the executive engineer of flood control and SDO Sadar to conduct an inquiry and submit a report. The collapse of three bridges in the last two days has worried the residents, who attribute the incidents to heavy rain, poor maintenance, and erosion beneath the bridges. On Wednesday, two small bridges over the Gandaki river under Janta Bazar block in Saran district collapsed, causing difficulties for locals. However, DM Samir confirmed the collapse of only one bridge and said a team of officials was sent to the site to collect detailed information.
