MUMBAI: Shariful Fakir, the Bangladeshi national who allegedly attacked actor Saif Ali Khan at his home in January, has sought bail, claiming he was falsely implicated and that the FIR was merely an imaginary account by the complainant, a staff nurse employed at the residence.
Fakir was arrested on January 19, four days after the attack.
“The charges sought to be attributed to the applicant are totally baseless and false, and he is falsely implicated. This is an incident of misuse and abuse of legal provisions,” the plea stated. The bail application is scheduled for hearing on April 1 before the sessions court.
In January, Mumbai Police confirmed that Shariful Islam’s face matched the image captured in CCTV footage from Khan’s residence. Officers conducted a facial recognition test after concerns were raised that Fakir’s appearance differed from the intruder seen in the footage.
It was alleged that on December 31, Shariful surveyed the Bandra and Khar areas before securing a job at a Bandra (W) hotel, located just a few meters from Satguru Sharan, where Saif Ali Khan resides.
Following a dispute with the hotel owner, he quit the job. On January 16, he allegedly walked from Bandra to Khar and then to Satguru Sharan, where he attempted a burglary, leading to the attack on the actor.
