Rupauli elections: Bima Bharti asserts people’s support over CM’s influence | Patna News – Times of India
Patna: A day after chief minister Nitish Kumar claimed Bima Bharti won elections in the past because of him, the RJD candidate from the Rupauli seat on Sunday said it was the masses who elected her, not the CM.
Bharti, now a Grand Alliance-backed RJD candidate, had won the last assembly elections from this seat on a JD(U) ticket. She has been winning elections for four consecutive terms since 2005 on various parties’ tickets, although she first emerged victorious from this seat as an Independent candidate in 2000.
The by-poll to this seat, where polling will be held on July 10, was necessitated after sitting JD(U) legislator Bharti resigned as an MLA to contest the just-held Lok Sabha elections on an RJD ticket, although she lost.
“I have been winning elections from this seat due to the support of the masses, not because of the CM,” Bharti told mediapersons. “Nirdaliya bhi hamko wahi jitaye the (Did he also ensure my victory as an Independent candidate)?” she asked. Bharti advised the CM to ponder a while before speaking and added the people of Rupauli were great who constantly elected her.
Claiming she was getting the support of all sections of society, Bharti said it was due to people’s support that ultimately the CM himself had to join the poll campaign against her. “I have been winning elections due to my performance. When I first got elected, roads and bridges were all missing but now you can drive fast,” she claimed, adding the Grand Alliance partners were lending full support to her.
Rupauli by-poll is the first major show of strength between the two major coalitions — NDA and INDIA bloc — after the just-concluded Lok Sabha elections, which saw the ruling alliance losing nine seats to the opposition parties. In the 2019 LS polls, the NDA had made a clean sweep winning 39 seats out of the state’s total 40, but in the recent polls, the NDA was able to win only 30 seats.
Meanwhile, leader of opposition in Bihar assembly, Tejashwi Prasad Yadav, is expected to campaign for Bharti on Monday, RJD spokesperson Shakti Singh Yadav said.
