MUMBAI: Not everyone who robs Peter pays Paul. A 32-year-old who allegedly cheated his company of Rs 10.6 crore used the ill-gotten funds on having a lavish wedding, taking his new bride on their honeymoon and much more. This is what the chargesheet filed by the police states.
Raj Mukesh Ganatra (32), a senior employee at Trident Creation, which has its office in the city, repaid two loans he had availed of – one for Rs 30 lakh taken to bet on cricket matches, another loan of Rs 10 lakh.He also invested Rs 15 lakh in shares and mutual funds, splurged Rs 15 lakh on himself. A lavish wedding reception that had cost him Rs 16 lakh which he paid from the company’s funds, and paid Rs 3.5 lakh for the honeymoon.
The chargesheet also mentions that the police investigation has revealed that the accused had availed of 42 loans between 2014 and 2022, of which he had repaid 31 using the company’s funds which he allegedly misappropriated.
The chargesheet filed last month by Economic Offences Wing the city police how the accused used the money. The police said he forged company documents to pinch huge sums from the company. During his six-year stint, the accused diverted the money into various bank accounts of his relatives, the police said. According to the company director, Kajal Ajmera, the accused, who worked as ‘shipment documentation officer’ inflated bills of 55 of the company’s clients by 10% to 15% each.
He then diverted the comapny’s funds into his bank account and accounts of his relatives – his wife Jarna, sister Bhakti, friend Dinesh Doshi, Doshi’s son Yaman, and another friend Darshan Potdar. The scam was unearthed when the company stumbled upon certain discrepancies in their bank account statements.
The police said that the accused had purchased air conditioners, fully automatic washing machines, and water purifiers. The chargesheet also mentions that the police have recorded the statements of his friends from whom he had taken loan to bet on cricket matches.
Ganatra was arrested by officials of Economic Offences Wing earlier this year and booked for cheating and misappropriation of funds.
