Chennai: The state govt is considering upgrading Ramanathapuram and Perambalur municipalities into municipal corporations, municipal administration and water supply minister KN Nehru announced in his reply to the demand for grants in the assembly.
“Ramanathapuram, once the capital of kings, and Perambalur, known for its agriculture-based trade and industrial growth, have shown rapid urban development. After discussions with the CM, a decision will be taken to elevate these municipalities to corporation status,” Nehru said.
He said the move is part of the govt’s efforts to enhance civic infrastructure and governance in growing urban centres. In the past four years, the govt created 10 new corporations and 31 municipalities and initiated steps to merge several village and town panchayats with existing corporations.
