Royal Families: Ganjam royal families fail to taste poll success for the 1st time in 72 years | Bhubaneswar News
Berhampur: For the first time since 1952, the state assembly will not have any MLA from the royal families of Ganjam district.
Third-generation candidates from two royal families, who had contested from Chikiti and Sanakhemundi assembly constituencies this time on BJD tickets, failed to taste electoral success.
BJD nominee Chinmayananda Srirup Deb, son of former minister Usha Devi, was defeated by BJP’s Manoranjan Dyan Samantara in Chikiti.Similarly, BJD candidate Sulakshana Geetanjali Devi, daughter of former MLA Nandini Devi, lost to sitting Congress MLA Ramesh Chandra Jena in Sanakhemundi.
V Sugnana Kumari Deo, scion of Khallikote royal family, Usha Devi, member of Chikiti royal family, A N Singh Deo (Geetanjali’s grandfather) and Uday Narayan Dev, members of royal families of Dharakote and Podamari, respectively, were elected to the assembly earlier.
Geetanjali’s grandmother Shanti Devi, father Kishore Chandra Singh Deo and mother Nandini were also elected MLAs. Members of royal families of Badakhemundi and Mahuri had also won assembly elections.
The highest number of four members of royal families was elected in the 1977 election, followed by three in 1961, 1974, 1990, 2004 and 2014. Similarly, two members were elected in 1971, 1995, 2000 and 2009, while one member won the polls in 1952, 1957, 1967, 1980, 1985 and 2019.
“The defeat of both royal scions not only signifies personal political setbacks but also marks the end of the long-standing political association of their families,” said J K Mohapatra, former vice-chancellor, Berhampur University.
