Rourkela cops deploy drones for daily patrol, curb crimes | Bhubaneswar News

Bhubaneswar: Rourkela police have introduced an advanced surveillance system using AI-equipped drones, christened ‘eyes from the sky’, for daily patrolling and crime prevention in the steel city.
While police in Bhubaneswar and some other districts are periodically deploying drones during festivals and public gatherings, this marks the first instance of implementing such technology for daily patrolling, officers said.
“Initially, we have acquired two drones for daily patrolling in vulnerable areas to prevent crimes. These drones are being used in law enforcement activities and criminal surveillance. The aerial devices come fitted with AI-powered cameras, warning sirens, illumination systems and public address systems,” Rourkela SP, Nitesh Wadhwani, told TOI.
Police said the AI capabilities enable them to monitor suspects and vehicles involved in criminal activities. The drones are positioned to observe city entry and exit points, assisting police in preventing criminals from escaping.
Police authorities have confirmed that drones are being deployed in areas with limited cop presence. These devices are monitoring potential criminal hideouts and helping prevent public consumption of alcohol and narcotics. The SP said that the drones serve as an extended arm of police capabilities during various operations.
“Using the drones, we are communicating important messages through the public announcement and siren systems. Ten personnel have received proper training to operate the drone patrol system,” Wadhwani said.
The unmanned aerial vehicles can cover vast areas quickly and efficiently, providing real-time footage to the police control room. AI technology enables the drones to automatically detect suspicious activities, large gatherings and potential security threats.
“The technology acts as a force multiplier. Our officers can now monitor multiple locations simultaneously and respond to situations more rapidly. Apart from crime control activities, the drones are particularly effective in monitoring crowded areas and managing traffic congestion,” the SP said.
The AI system is programmed to recognise patterns associated with criminal activities and alert cops immediately when detecting unusual behaviour. The drones are also equipped with night vision capabilities, ensuring round-the-clock surveillance.
DGP Y B Khurania, during his visit to Rourkela last week, said, “Odisha police have started leveraging technology to curb criminal activities and bolster law enforcement efforts. Major urban areas in the state will soon have sophisticated CCTV surveillance systems.”
