STA gets road safety award for SuVahak

Bhubaneswar: The State transport authority (STA) of Odisha has been given the FICCI Road Safety Award 2024 for its groundbreaking initiative, SuVahak (enhancing skill set of heavy motor vehicle drivers) at a special event in New Delhi on Wednesday.
Under SuVahak, STA has been elevating the skills of heavy motor vehicle drivers, who are responsible for approximately 21% of fatal accidents in the state.Under this programme, four driving training institutes provide training to such drivers.
In the training institutes, 23,186 refresher and 5,942 fresher drivers have been trained, 1,612 drivers have been provided with employment opportunities and 30 drivers have been selected for overseas employment with substantial remuneration. Pradeep Kumar Mohanty, joint transport commissioner, said the Odisha road safety project epitomizes what can be accomplished when the govt, civil society and the private sector coalesce with a shared objective. tnn

Driver killed as truck overturns into canal
In an early morning incident, a truck driven by Justin from Kollam district overturned and fell into a canal on the Alappuzha bypass. Local residents attempted to rescue him to no avail. The vehicle was transporting steel bars. Police suspect the driver may have fallen asleep, leading to the loss of control.
