Retd cop’s kin books Bangkok holiday online, loses 1.6 lakh | Mumbai News – Times of India

Mumbai: This vacation turned out to be a stressful one. The daughter-in-law of a retired police officer was cheated of Rs 1.6 lakh after paying for hotel booking and air tickets for a trip to to Pattaya-Bangkok. She had done the bookings for herself and her husband through a website which turned out to be fake. Only the tickets to fly out of India were genuine. The fraud came to light after the son and daughter-in-law of retired deputy commissioner of police Ambadas Pote (69) reached the hotel in Bangkok on May 17, only to be told there was no reservation made in their name. Also, their return flight ticket turned out to be fake. The couple had no choice but to arrange for funds for their accommodation and the return trip. The daughter-in-law registered a criminal offence at MHB Colony police station, Borivli, on Friday. The payments had been made online to one Akhilesh Singh who is now being investigated in the fraud case, said the police. The police complaint states that the daughter-in-law had found the details of a travel company on the internet. It had put out a tempting package to Bangkok, costing Rs 2 lakh for four people. The price prompted them to choose this travel agency, says the police complaint. It further specifies: “My daughter-in-law transferred Rs 88,000 on April 7 for flight tickets and the balance Rs 1.12 lakh on April 21. The agency sent a WhatsApp confirmation for their booking at Pullman Pattaya Hotel in Bangkok. On May 17, when the two of them arrived at the hotel, they found out that there were no reservation that had been made in their name.”A police officer said that the couple found out that the hotel booking and return flight tickets had initially been booked, but were later cancelled. “The travel agency owner’s phone was switched off. His was not reachable…,” the complaint says, adding that the two arranged for fresh accommodation and return tickets. Thier suspicion of a cyber fraud was confirmed.
