Thane: A day after the Thane municipal commissioner ordered the demolition of illegal buildings across its jurisdiction, Diva residents took to the streets in protest, expressing their anger and frustration over the anticipated civic action and blamed the police, civic officials for turning a blind eye to the illegal buildings while they were being constructed.
On Saturday, in a dramatic display of dissent, locals installed a large effigy with a noose in the middle of the building as a symbol of their protest.
The TMC stated that there are 769 unauthorised constructions across various ward committee areas under Thane Municipal Corporation. Of these, 663 structures were already recorded in the beat diaries by ward inspectors.
The possible demolition drive has triggered fear amongst the residents, who insist they were not given rehabilitation options before the decision was enforced. The residents also alleged that the builders who constructed the buildings on the basis of forged documents are not being held responsible; instead, the occupants who were cheated are being punished.
A resident of Diva said, “Let there be a high level inquiry and check the records of the buildings, including the forged CC and OC, and take action against the main perpetrator. Even we are being cheated, and now the sword of becoming homeless looms over us.”
Another resident said, “I wonder 663 unauthorised construction and no one from the authorities saw it? The police, local politicians, as well as civic officials, are also hand in glove, as it was exposed during the Lucky Compound building collapse case. They should also be held accountable for the illegal constructions, not just in Diva, but the illegal constructions are rampant in Mumbra, Shil Daighar, Kalwa, Wagle Estate, etc.”
On Friday, Thane municipal commissioner Saurabh Rao issued strict orders for their immediate demolition, emphasizing that no efforts should be spared. Assistant commissioners were directed to deploy all available manpower and machinery to carry out this task effectively.
At a high-level review meeting held on Friday evening at the Commissioner’s office, Rao stressed that no excuses—such as lack of police support, local opposition, or political pressure—should hinder the demolition process. The entire responsibility lies with the assistant commissioners, and failure to comply will result in strict action.
The deputy commissioners of the circle will provide additional assistance as needed, but Rao made it clear that there should be no delays in implementation. “We must not create the impression that we are neglecting our duty. Court orders on unauthorized constructions must be followed strictly and in a timely manner. Any lapse in the legal process will not be tolerated,” Rao emphasized during the meeting.
Rao further warned that any assistant commissioner failing to carry out demolitions will face disciplinary action. “If you wish to serve in this position, you must work without bowing to any pressure,” he said.
