Remain prepared to tackle flood & drought, DMs told

Patna: In light of the normal rainfall predicted by the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) for July, Patna divisional commissioner Kumar Ravi has directed the district magistrates (DMs) of respective districts to remain on high alert to tackle potential flood or drought situations.
In a letter addressed to them, Ravi emphasized adhering to the standard operating procedure (SOP) prepared by the disaster management department (DMD) for managing any contingency, whether related to floods or droughts. The letter, containing directives, instructions, and advisory, was sent to the DMs of Patna, Nalanda, Bhojpur (Ara), Buxar, Kaimur, and Rohtas.
Noting that Kaimur and Rohtas districts are not flood-prone, Ravi stressed that rain gauge readings should be monitored down to the panchayat level to identify emerging flood or drought situations. He also directed the DMs to maintain vigilance and ensure inter-departmental coordination to address issues in both urban and rural areas.
In anticipation of potential floods, Ravi said divers should be trained, agreements made for the supply of private boats, and necessary items such as life jackets, motor boats, inflatable boats, polythene sheets, medicines, cattle fodder, and shelter points for displaced people should be prepared in advance.
Ravi also emphasized the protection of embankments, stating that arrangements should be made for their surveillance. “An information-flow mechanism should be established, with a focus on quick response in any emergency situation,” he said.
