Regular passenger calls Diva-Mumbra stretch a death trap, says he bought AC train pass to avoid footboard travel

Mumbai: Daily commuter Riyaz Ahmed Shaikh terms the Diva-Mumbra rail stretch “a death trap”. “I travel every day from Mumbra to Kurla and onward to Chembur, and I can affirm this was a tragedy waiting to happen,” Shaikh said.He said the train arrives completely full from Kalyan-Ambarnath, and to avoid travelling on the footboard he had purchased an AC train pass.“It is an impossible task to board at Mumbra. And then there is this deadly turn near Mumbra which actually tilts the coaches and causes people to fall to the other side. It is such a sharp turn that people tend to lose their grip,” he said.Shaikh is employed as a property manager in a housing society in Chembur. “On Monday, one of the ladies of our society called to ask if I was fine, because I travel to work at the same time that the accident occurred. That is when I learnt of the mishap,” he said. “Since I am in my 50s, there is no question of me fighting to get inside the train or risk my life by standing on the footboard. So I have purchased an AC train pass for Rs 1,500. But not everybody can,” he said.
