Registration of escalators and lifts made mandatory in Bihar | Patna News – Times of India


Patna: State cabinet on Friday approved the Bihar Lift and Escalator Bill proposed by the energy department to regulate the use of lifts and escalators in multi-storey buildings, commercial complexes, hospitals, offices and hotels, an official the BSPHCL told TOI. As per the provisions in the Bill, unregulated use of lifts and escalators in multi-storied buildings, commercial complexes, hospitals, offices and hotels will no longer be possible.The use of lifts and escalators in these places will now require proper registration and mandatory inspection at least once every three years.
Expressing happiness over the cabinet approval on the Bill, principal secretary (energy)-cum-CMD of BSPHCL, Sanjeev Hans, said the construction of multi-storey apartments, commercial buildings and hotels has increased rapidly in the recent years due to the limited land size and high population density in the state. “Regulating the proper operation of these machines and equipment from a safety perspective has become necessary to prevent any safety lapses and ensure the availability of automated rescue devices as per the set standards,” he said.
Earlier, the Centre’s consumer affairs department had requested the states, including Bihar, to frame a law to regulate uses of lifts and escalators in multi-storey buildings. The state cabinet also approved the proposal of the energy department to install smart prepaid meters in all government offices with a sanctioned load of 20 kw or less.
State’s energy minister Bijendra Prasad Yadav said, “This decision is a significant step towards making Bihar a smart and safe state in terms of power usage and management.
