Reema rebuilds life six years after tragedy

Bhubaneswar: Little did she realise that her married life will be cut short by a cruel incident. Reemarani Sahu, the wife of Soumya Sekhar, who died in the Patnagarh wedding gift blast, lived with her in-laws for six years. She faced an inconceivable tragedy on the sixth day of her marriage when the imprints of her bridal embellishments had not even faded. In March 2024, she remarried and now lives in a foreign land, about which both families declined to say a word.Reema’s father-in-law, Rabindra Sahoo, a retired lecturer, recalled that Reema didn’t know about her husband (my son succumbing to the blast) as she was injured and getting treated at SCB Medical College and Hospital, Cuttack. “Tragedy struck when both (my son and Reema) were starting their marital life. Then it was the freshly painted walls where somberness set in following the explosion. The kitchen was in tatters, where Reema, for the initial four days, would spend time as a new bride. Walls of other rooms had cracks as household items like clocks and wall hangings had fallen off under the impact of the blast,” Sahoo said.He said he did everything for her remarriage as she spent six years after the incident with them like a daughter. “I wanted her to live the rest of her life away from the traumatic memories and lead life afresh in some foreign land,” Sahoo said. After the explosion, Reema was the first to come out of the house as she was conscious and cried for help. She fell down in the garden in front of the house after narrating the incident to locals, who had gathered on hearing the sound of the huge explosion. In fact, according to the neighbours, Reema received the parcel, but Soumya opened it while his grandmother Jemamani, who also died, was sitting close to Soumya. According to the crime branch, Soumya and Jemamani bore the maximum impact while Reema, who was slightly away, was saved.Soumya’s sister, Abantika, has completed her MBBS and plans to do PG in gynaecology. She is currently living in Delhi.
