Rare ornate flying snake rescued from construction site in Dahanu

Vasai: A rare ornate flying snake was rescued near a construction site in Dahanu on Monday night by the members of the NGO Wildlife Welfare Association (WWA). The villagers alerted the forest officials who came with WWA members and rescued this snake on Monday night. The snake may have been transported from the Konkan region by trucks carrying red bricks to the construction site. The snake was sent for veterinary observation and scientific documentation. “We will take proper care and will also do documentation of this snake, after which we will release it into the forest region of south-western Maharashtra where this species is mostly found,” said Rohit Mohite, Honorary Wildlife Warden, Thane District, Forest Department, Maharashtra & Committee Member of Wildlife welfare association. The ornate flying snake is a semi-venomous species known for its distinctive flying ability, which it achieves by flattening its body and gliding through the air. Its population is declining due to habitat loss and fragmentation.
