Rape survivor’s killer took cues from TV show

Bhubaneswar/Jharsuguda: In a chilling revelation, police uncovered the calculated methods behind the gruesome murder in Sundargarh district, where a rape survivor was brutally killed and chopped into pieces by her alleged attacker.
SP (Jharsuguda) Smit Parmar said on Thursday that the 28-year-old accused, Kunu Kisan, was inspired by a popular crime show on TV. He revealed this to the police, and it was established from his mobile phone browsing record.
Kunu, who worked as a mason, severed the 18-year-old victim’s hands to eliminate fingerprint evidence, partially cremated her head to conceal facial features, and disposed of her clothing separately to hamper identification efforts. He mimicked what he had watched in a crime show and was under the illusion that he would never get caught.
Police said he threw the six body parts at separate locations in a river so that even if one part was found, identification would remain challenging. Besides, he threw them in water, believing fish and aquatic animals would eat them, hastening decomposition, the SP said.
While police managed to piece together almost the entire body, forensic teams collected hairs from her semi-decomposed remains for DNA profiling to make it a watertight case. While the family members already identified the body and the accused confessed, the DNA test will further prove the identity of the deceased, police said.
After he got bail on Dec 4, the accused met the girl many times in Jharsuguda town, where she relocated after the rape incident in Sundargarh in Aug. He tried to persuade her to change her statement in court, believing that otherwise, he would land in jail. He, however, never trusted her. The girl told him that she lodged the rape case under pressure from her uncle, the accused told police.
On Dec 7, the accused picked up his juvenile accomplice from Rourkela. The latter came prepared with petrol in a bottle. After leaving Jharsuguda in the evening, they stopped at a place on NH 143, Rourkela-Deogarh Road, under Lathikata police station in Rourkela police district, 100 km away. While the juvenile stood on the road, he took her a few steps away from the road into a field to talk and murdered her by slitting her neck from behind there.
