Rainfall Deficit: IMD predicts heavy rainfall in Odisha to cover 30% deficit in June within 24 hours | Bhubaneswar News
Bhubaneswar: June witnessed a rain deficit of around 30% compared to last year, the IMD said, but held out hope it may be wiped out in the next 24 hours.
“A low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal is likely to cause heavy to very heavy rainfall in most parts of the state till July 1. The 30% deficit in cumulative rain is expected to be covered in the next 24 hours,” said Manorama Mohanty, director of IMD’s Bhubaneswar centre.
State received a cumulative rainfall of 141.3 mm against the normal 201.4 mm from June 1.Only 1 district (Malkangiri) received 21% excess rainfall, 2 (Mayurbhanj and Balasore) have large deficits and 17 have between 20% and 60% deficit since June 1. Nabarangpur, Koraput, Rayagada, Kandhamal, Sonepur, Nayagarh, Dhenkanal, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur and Deogarh received normal rainfall. Even after arriving about 12 days late, state had received 163.7 mm (-22%) rainfall between June 1 and 30 last year.
Heavy rainfall is very likely to occur at one or two places over Jharsuguda, Sundargarh, Sambalpur, Deogarh, Bargarh, Angul, Dhenkanal, Balasore, Bhadrak, Kendrapada and Jagatsinghpur districts. Very heavy rainfall is likely at one or two places over Mayurbhanj and Keonjhar districts by Sunday, the IMD said.
