Rain dampens Christmas celebrations at many places

Bhubaneswar: Intermittent light to moderate rainfall continued across the state for the second day on Wednesday, dampening Christmas celebrations at many places and raising concerns among farmers about crop damage.
A well-marked low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal, responsible for the current rainfall, is expected to weaken by Thursday, according to IMD.
Bhawanipatna recorded the highest rainfall of 60.4 mm, while the twin cities of Bhubaneswar and Cuttack received 18.8 mm and 20.6 mm, respectively. Tangi in Khurda district had recorded 74 mm rainfall in the previous 24 hours.
“We had planned grand Christmas celebrations at home, similar to church festivities. However, the rain affected our plans to some extent,” said Haris D Costa, a resident of Jatni town. Despite the weather conditions, regular church programmes continued.
Rain has left farmers worried about their harvest-ready crops and vegetable cultivation. “We have no option except leave our fate to the God,” said Chintamani Paltasing, a farmer of Barang area.
IMD has issued dense fog warnings for Thursday in several districts including Sonepur, Boudh, Nuapada, Balangir, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Nabarangpur, Rayagada, Koraput and Malkangiri. District collectors have been put on alert, and advisories have been issued regarding restricted traffic movement on busy highways.
Manorama Mohanty, head of the regional IMD centre here, said the state is likely to experience mostly dry weather by Friday, with only light rain expected in south Odisha districts on Thursday.
Daringbadi in Kandhamal district recorded the lowest temperature of 13.5 degrees Celsius, followed by Sundargarh at 14.4C.
