Bhubaneswar: The railways will close the level crossing near Bahanaga Bazar station in Balasore district, where a triple-train crash on June 2 last year claimed 296 lives. To eliminate the level crossing gate no. 94, it has sanctioned a road overbridge (ROB) at an estimated cost of Rs 51.51 crore to ensure for hassle-free connectivity.
People now have to wait for several minutes at the level crossing while trains pass because the Howrah-Chennai mainline is one of the busiest railway routes. After the construction of the ROB, people will not have to wait long to cross over to the other side.
More than 100 trains pass through Bahanaga every day, and people have to wait some time at the level crossing gate. “We use the level crossing gate to move between different villages situated near NH-16. The ROB will save our time,” said Chakradhar Behera, president of an auto association, Bahanaga Bazar station. The railways will remove LC gate no. 101 and construct a road underbridge (RUB) for people. “The ROB and RUB will help the locals, said a senior railway officer.
The LC gate no. 94 was badly damaged due to the triple-train pile-up last year. The railways has also sanctioned Rs 3.8 crore for the construction of a new 3-metre wide foot overbridge (FOB) at the station. Work for the augmentation of water supply has been sanctioned.
Construction of a third line, along with new goomties for LC gate numbers 94, 95, and 101, a new station building, circulating area, and extension and raising of platform no. 1, is in progress. A new RCC approach road (5.5 m-wide) connecting LC gate 94 with the station building and extending up to LC gate 95, along with a side drain, is under construction.
The existing FOB at the station has been strengthened. The railways has installed two high-mast lights to the approach of LC gate 94 and street lights on the approach road from the level crossing to the station. Complete track renewal (secondary) has been done on the up loop line, the sources said.
Last year, railway minister Ashwini Vaishnaw had sanctioned Rs 1.55 crore from his MPLAD funds for development works in Bahanaga and in Balasore district headquarters hospital.
