Patna: The role of loco pilots (drivers) and train managers (guards) is crucial for ensuring passenger safety during train journeys. Keeping this in mind, the railways has provided essential facilities at each running room and crew lobby under the jurisdiction of the East Central Railway (ECR).
ECR chief public relations officer (CPRO) Saraswati Chandra said the running rooms have been equipped with AC and room heater facilities for loco pilots and train managers during their short rest periods.“Cleanliness is prioritised in all running rooms. RO water facilities have also been installed. Subsidized meals are available in most ECR running rooms for these staff members,” Chandra said.

According to Chandra, kitchen facilities are available in the running rooms for those who prefer to cook their meals or breakfast. “Recreational amenities, reading rooms, foot massage, and yoga facilities have been provided at all running rooms in the ECR. The CPRO said refresher courses and counselling sessions are regularly conducted for loco pilots and train managers to keep them updated on safety measures as directed by the Railway Board,” he said.
The railways has made it mandatory for all loco pilots and train managers to undergo a breathalyzer test at the crew lobby before signing on duty to ensure they have not consumed liquor, the CPRO said.
Notably, leader of opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi visited the New Delhi railway station crew lobby last Friday to gain first-hand insight into the challenges and problems faced by loco pilots on duty.
