Rag-Pickers: Rescue of Child Rag-Pickers in Gajapati District | Bhubaneswar News


Berhampur: Gajapati district administration rescued three minor rag-pickers from Paralakhemundi on Thursday.
The rescued children aged between 8 and 14 years, including two girls, are suspected to be from Andhra Pradesh and living near Paralakhemundi for several years.
After being rescued, the children were produced before the district child welfare committee.They were handed over to their parents after they assured us that they will not be engaged in hazardous works, said Arun Kumar Tripathy, district child protection officer.
He said the district administration has decided to make Paralakhemundi free from child labourers and beggars. A child protection unit has been working towards it. He said during preliminary counselling they found children were eager to continue studies. “We will take steps to enroll these children in suitable schools,” he said.TNN
