Bhubaneswar: The queue darshan system at Puri Jagannath Temple, which was scheduled to begin from New Year’s Day has been postponed to Jan 20, said law minister Prithiviraj Harichandan on Tuesday.
“A significant crowd expected on Jan 1 prompted the administration to reschedule the introduction of the organised queue darshan facility. The govt is committed to a hassle-free darshan system in the shrine,” Harichandan said.
The revised system incorporates a six-lane ramp enclosed by wooden collapsible barricades at Natamandap, the dancing hall situated opposite the sanctum sanctorum.The planned arrangement will provide dedicated pathways for men, women and senior citizens, with provisions for differently-abled devotees planned for the future.
The new system will enhance visibility of the deities while devotees stand in queues. According to the updated design, all visitors will enter through Sata Pahacha. Women and elderly worshippers will exit via Ghanti Dwara, whilst male devotees will use Garada Dwara after darshan. The administration has stationed 20 former defence personnel at Ananda Bazaar to collaborate with regular security staff in managing devotee movement during the purchase of Mahaprasad.
Shree Jagannath Temple Administration (SJTA) deems this modification crucial, considering the present system which often creates confusion and inconvenience for visitors. Devotees unable to enter the sanctum sanctorum now gather in Natamandap without any order, struggling to view the sibling deities due to overcrowding.
