Mumbai/Pune: A day after special IGP (prisons) Jalindar Supekar was stripped of his additional charge as deputy IG (prisons) of Nashik, Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar and Nagpur divisions in the wake of claims that he had tried to shield the in-laws of alleged Pune dowry harassment-suicide victim Vaishnavi Hagawane , the daughter-in-law of expelled NCP functionary Rajendra Hagawane, he was on Friday transferred as deputy commandant general (home guards). Supekar has also been accused of playing a role in securing gun licences for Vaishnavi’s husband, her brother-in-law and a family friend. Additional secretary (home) Sandeep Dhakane issued the transfer order.CM Devendra Fadnavis told reporters in Pune that he had received a complaint about allegations against Supekar over shielding the Hagawane family. “We are looking into its merits and have ensured that no one does any mischief or puts pressure on the ongoing investigation into the case,” he said.The govt action came after social activist Anjali Damania recently voiced concerns about the alleged corrupt practices of Supekar, who is said to be related to the Hagawanes, and also demanded an investigation into phone communications between him and the family during their attempt to evade arrest in the dowry harassment-suicide case. She had claimed that Supekar had played a part in securing firearm licences for Vaishnavi’s husband Shashank, her brother-in-law Sushil and family friend Nilesh Chavan. She alleged that Chavan got a firearm licence despite having a previous criminal record.Supekar has denied the allegations.Vaishnavi (24) was found hanging from a ceiling fan in her marital home in Bhukum on May 16. Her family alleged that she suffered harassment at the hands of her in-laws over a Rs 2-crore dowry demand. Six people have been arrested so far in the case. Shashank, his mother Lata, and his sister Karishma have been in magisterial custody at Yerawada jail under since May 29. Rajendra and Sushil are in police custody till May 31. Damania had raised the concern that the Hagawane family might get preferential treatment in prison.
