Protest against ‘dairy industry cruelty’ held outside zoo | Patna News – Times of India
Patna: Activists from a non-profit, Mercy For Animals, staged a visual protest near Patna zoo on Tuesday, shedding light on the alleged cruelties and hidden violence of the dairy industry. An activist, dressed as a traditional ‘milkman’, stood alongside a bicycle loaded with four milk cans, each grotesquely bearing the likeness of a protruding, calf’s bloody head, symbolising the male calves, deemed commercially worthless, who are often left to die shortly after birth. The act also demonstrated the eventual slaughter of buffaloes once their milk production declines, as well as the grim future awaiting female calves destined to endure the same cycle of forced impregnation and exploitation for milk as their mothers.Kushal Samaddar, organising coordinator at Mercy For Animals India, articulated the core message of the protest: “Dairy is a relentless cycle of cruelty, suffering and death fuelled by human demand for milk. By consuming dairy, people unknowingly support a brutal system that rips calves away from their mothers, confines cows in misery and sends countless innocent beings to an early, unnecessary death,” he said.The Mercy For Animals alleged the state’s dairy industry is marked with severe irregularities, including unhygienic and inhumane conditions for cows and buffaloes. The organisation said that established regulations are routinely ignored, pointing to systemic neglect and cruelty at multiple levels.Through this symbolic display, activists sought to ignite a critical dialogue and call for an urgent shift towards more compassionate and sustainable food choices.
