Proposal sent to Centre for restoring 200-yr-old Jeypore lake under AMRUT 2.0: Min

Koraput: The ongoing restoration and renovation of Jagannath Sagar, a two-century-old lake in Jeypore, is likely to receive a significant boost as the state level high-powered steering committee (SHPSC) has recommended its inclusion under the Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT) 2.0 scheme.
Housing and urban development minister Krushna Chandra Mahapatra informed the assembly in this regard on Tuesday while responding to a query from Jeypore MLA Tara Prasad Bahinipati regarding the status of the lake’s restoration.
The minister said the project is currently being implemented under the state govt’s ‘Amo Pokhari’ scheme, with administrative and technical approval granted for over Rs 14 crore. So far, Rs 5.60 crore was sanctioned, leading to the complete dewatering of the lake and around 37% completion of de-weeding work.
“To expedite and ensure the completion of the renovation work of Jagannath Sagar, the Centre has been urged to include the project under the AMRUT 2.0 scheme. The SHPSC has approved the proposal, which has been sent to the central govt for final approval,” the minister added.
Jagannath Sagar, originally spread over 115 hectares, was excavated in the late 17th century during the reign of Maharaja Vikram Deo-I to address the water needs of Jeypore. However, due to illegal encroachment and alleged administrative negligence, the lake’s size has now reduced to 67.40 hectares.
Restoration and renovation of the lake has been a long-standing demand of the locals.
