Pregnant woman shot dead in S’garh, family suspects planned murder | Bhubaneswar News

Rourkela: A seven-month pregnant woman was shot dead by unidentified assailants at her residence in Jhirdapalli village under Bonai sub-division of Sundargarh district late Wednesday night.
The victim, Samyamayee Behera (31), cousin of Chhendipada MLA Agasti Behera, was allegedly attacked when she opened the door of her residence after hearing someone trying to break in around 12.30 am. According to her husband, Deben Kumar Behera (35), a panchayat executive officer, the assailants attempted to snatch her gold chain. When she resisted, they shot her in the chest and fled with the jewellery.
“I heard a loud noise and rushed to the main door, only to find the area covered in smoke and my wife lying dead,” said Deben Kumar in his FIR. Samyamayee was rushed to Bonai sub-divisional hospital, where she was declared brought dead.
The victim’s father, Pitambar Behera, who arrived at the scene on Thursday along with other family members, including Akhayapada Behera, the MLA’s younger brother, alleged that this was a planned murder.
Brijesh Kumar Rai, DIG of police, Western Range, Rourkela, visited the crime scene on Thursday. “A murder case has been registered, and an investigation is in progress,” he said. A scientific team has examined the site, and the body has been sent to Sundargarh district headquarters hospital for post-mortem examination.
The police have launched a manhunt to nab the culprits.
