Mumbai: A pre-monsoon review meeting of the district disaster management authority was held at the BMC headquarters on Tuesday.Mahesh Narvekar, director of BMC’s Disaster Management Department, made a presentation on the ongoing disaster preparedness measures. Representatives from Central Railway, Western Railway, IMD, Indian Coast Guard, Navy, NDRF, Mumbai Traffic Police, MHADA, SRA, PWD, MMRDA, BEST, Tata Power, Adani Energy, and other agencies were also present at the meeting.“The municipal systems should be fully prepared to ensure that citizens do not face any inconvenience during the monsoon season,” said Vipin Sharma, chairperson of the Mumbai Suburban District Disaster Management Authority and additional municipal commissioner (Western Suburbs). He urged all agencies to collaborate efficiently and bring in their collective experience to minimise citizen hardship during the upcoming monsoon.Sharma instructed that one NDRF unit each be stationed in the island city, eastern suburbs, and western suburbs. He also directed the traffic police to create “green corridors” to allow these units to reach emergency locations quickly. Having dedicated teams in each region will ensure faster emergency response and provide immediate relief to affected citizens, he explained.To prevent waterlogging during monsoon, deputy and assistant municipal commissioners were instructed to coordinate with the stormwater drains department to deploy pumps and diesel generators. Tree pruning work by BMC is underway. Sharma stressed that all hoardings installed on land owned by various agencies must have valid structural stability certificates. If not, their licences should be revoked. He issued similar instructions for mobile towers and asked for joint inspections to prevent any accidents.The health department was asked to verify whether diesel generators at major and suburban hospitals are functioning at full capacity. All departments were directed to collaborate to ensure adequate preventive measures against monsoon-related illnesses. The fire department was instructed to deploy additional lifeguards along the coastline.
