Potato Price: Potato Price Surge in Bhubaneswar | Bhubaneswar News

Bhubaneswar: Potato was selling at Rs 50-60 per kg in the city markets on Wednesday despite assurances from the govt it will check the price of the tuber. Most of the vendors also kept their shops closed due to shortage of potatoes.
Sources said the supply from West Bengal remained suspended while potatoes imported from Uttar Pradesh are almost over leading to price rise.
“Potato is an essential item in the kitchen.Even though the prices are high, we must buy it. I bought potatoes at Rs 60 per kg but the govt is claiming it is being sold at Rs 35. If we know where it is available at Rs 35 per kg, we will go there to buy,” said Priyanka Samal, a homemaker.
The state has been facing a potato crisis since last month when supply from West Bengal was disrupted. Despite govt intervention, the supply has not been normalised yet. State govt has asked traders to import potatoes from Uttar Pradesh to meet the local demand.
“Potato stocks imported from Uttar Pradesh have been exhausted. Fresh supply has not yet arrived leading to shortage and price rise. Govt is claiming to deal with the crisis but nothing concrete is happening,” said Chitta Ranjan Sahu, a trader.
The potato price surge has impacted restaurants, small eateries and street food vendors, midday meal and Aahaar centres.
Sudhakar Panda, secretary of Odisha Traders’ Association, said, “Currently around 300 potato-laden trucks are stranded at the Odisha-West Bengal border.
