Portal for ration card application reopens

Bhubaneswar: State govt has reopened its online portal for ration card applications, food supplies and consumer welfare minister Krushna Chandra Patra announced on Saturday, bringing relief to around 10 lakh families waiting to be brought under the food security net.
“We’ve successfully eliminated 4 lakh ghost ration card holders from our records,” the minister said. “Additionally, income tax payers and govt employees have voluntarily surrendered their cards, making way for more deserving beneficiaries.”
Official sources said that while 6 lakh applications are already in the pipeline, another 4 lakh new applications are expected. The portal’s reopening is particularly significant as it remained closed in the lead-up to the 2024 general elections.
Under the combined umbrella of National Food Security Act (NFSA) and State Food Security Scheme (SFSS), eligible families can access essential food grains and rations. The initiative represents the govt’s commitment to ensuring food security for its most vulnerable citizens, official sources said.
“For many families struggling to make ends meet, the development offers a chance to access vital food subsidies. The online application process marks a modern approach to welfare distribution, making it more accessible and transparent for all eligible citizens of Odisha. The state govt hopes the move will help reach those truly in need while maintaining the integrity of the public distribution system,” Patra said.
