Portable shelter helps save critically ill cancer patient | Bhubaneswar News

Cuttack: A portable shelter set up by NDRF following the derailment of Bengaluru-Kamakhya AC Express at Manguli-Choudwar passenger halt in Cuttack district on Sunday saved the life of a critically ill cancer patient, whose health deteriorated after the accident.
Bihudutta Ray, a resident of West Bengal, was returning home after undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Bengaluru. Ray had undergone surgery to remove his tongue due to cancer effects. Following the derailment, his condition worsened, with his blood pressure dropping dangerously low and his heart rate fluctuating.
NDRF’s chief medical officer, Dr Neeraj Kumar, who led the medical response at the site, said, “Ray’s condition was critical as his BP had fallen significantly, and his heart rate was unstable. Immediate treatment was provided at the portable shelter, and he was administered IV fluids to stabilise his condition. Timely intervention prevented a life-threatening situation.”
Sanjukta Ray, who accompanied Bihudutta, said, “We were terrified as his condition deteriorated rapidly. Since he was unable to speak, he couldn’t express his pain. The NDRF team acted swiftly and stabilised him on time. We are grateful for their prompt response.”
Sarat Das, a cardiac patient from Balasore, who was also treated at the shelter, said, “I felt severe chest pain after the derailment, and my condition was worsening. The NDRF team immediately provided me with oxygen support and monitored my vitals. Their timely intervention stabilised my condition. I can’t thank them enough for saving my life.”
The portable shelter, set up within minutes after the accident, played a crucial role in providing immediate medical aid to critically ill passengers. The NDRF team treated 11 injured patients at the shelter before they were shifted to SCB Medical College and Hospital, Cuttack, for further care.
“Portable shelters are designed for such emergencies where timely medical intervention can make the difference between life and death. In this case, it was a lifesaver for Ray and many others,” added Dr Kumar.
NDRF deployed 82 personnel for rescue operations.
