Polling Booth: Waste-to-wealth polling booth in silk city to attract voters | Bhubaneswar News

Berhampur: When voters exercise their franchise at the Hillpatna polling station here on May 13, they will be part of a unique experience given that they will set foot in the country’s perhaps first eco-friendly polling booth where everything from the furniture to the election mascot, ‘Olly’, will be made of waste materials.
Named as the waste-to-wealth model polling station, the concept is developed jointly by the district administration, Berhampur Municipal Corporation (BeMC) and the government-run Industrial Training Institute (ITI), here.Around 35 students of ITI are working for the past week to make different materials for the polling booth using discarded items. The chairs for polling personnel will be made of discarded car tyres, the tables which will be used to keep EVM machines will be made in the bonnets of discarded vehicles. The 6ft-high mascot, Olly, will be made by around 8,000 bottles caps and a selfie point with a background of the India map will be prepared by damaged parts of computers.
On Friday, BeMC commissioner B P Mishra visited the polling station and reviewed the progress of the work.
“Preparation is going on in full swing and around 90% of the work is done. The entire task is likely to be completed by Sunday,” an officer said. The ITI students had earlier made several giant sculptures by using waste and discarded materials and installed them on campus. “We have agreed to develop the waste-to-wealth polling station after BeMC authorities proposed the idea,” Rajat Kumar Panigrahy, ITI Berhampur’s principal, said.
