Political Showdown in Kalwa-Mumbra: Jitendra Awhad Faces Najib Mulla Challenge | Mumbai News – Times of India

Thane: As the Assembly elections draw closer, the political landscape in the Kalwa-Mumbra constituency has transformed into an intense battleground, with three-time MLA Jitendra Awhad of the NCP-SP alliance facing a formidable challenge from his former ally, Najib Mulla of the NCP.
The constituency, known for its unique blend of urban development and sprawling slum areas in the twin suburbs of Thane, has become the centrestage of a compelling political drama. Both candidates have intensified their campaigns, with each presenting distinct visions for the region’s future, often engaging in verbal battles.
In the narrow lanes of Shanti Nagar slums near the Mafatlal company in Kalwa East, Awhad’s campaign received a warm reception. Supporters donning Gandhi caps showered flowers on the incumbent MLA as he made his way through familiar territory. Sushma Akka, a 63-year-old resident of Shanti Nagar, voiced her support for Awhad, emphasising his round-the-clock availability. “When in need, Awhad comes to help faster than any other person. He either addresses our concerns personally or ensures immediate assistance through his team,” she said.
During his visit, Awhad engaged directly with the residents in Shanti Nagar’s alleys, asking them about his performance. The crowd’s affirmative response echoed through the narrow lanes, demonstrating his sustained popularity among certain sections of the electorate.
Nevertheless, the incumbent faces opposition from a few sections. Some voters articulated their discontent on insufficient healthcare facilities, waste management, and sewerage systems. They also highlighted concerns about prevalent rampant illegal constructions, irregular water distribution, and garbage disposal challenges causing health risks. “Previously, we experienced tragedy with the Lucky compound illegal building collapse, which claimed 74 lives and injured 65 in 2013. Such incidents must not recur. Preventive measures are essential,” stated Muqtadir Muqbule, a Mumbra resident.
Shaijul Aman, a resident of Mumbra, said, “We feel Awhad has done significant work to transform Mumbra, but some comments he made in the media over the last few years have hurt sentiments of a particular community. At the same time, we are also contemplating if Najeeb is competent enough to handle the responsibility.”
Awhad said, “Citizens living here have seen the change since 2009. I have a bigger plan for the constituency with a plan for a big ground of MCA in the pipeline. Proper municipality markets, community halls, and UPSC/MPSC training centres are also on cards.”
