Mumbai: The state human rights commission has ordered Mira Bhayander Vasai Virar (MBVV) commissioner to provide a compensation of Rs 10 lakh to the mother of Abhay Palshetkar, a 27-year-old man who committed suicide at his Virar home three months ago.
Before taking the drastic step, Abhay recorded a video, blaming his wife, Arohi, and a policeman, Sunil Pawar, for his decision.
Abhay and Arohi had been married for 11 months. On the day of the suicide, Arohi had filed a complaint against Abhay, accusing him of physical and mental torture. In the video, Abhay claimed to be innocent and mentioned receiving a notice under CrPC section 149. He also alleged that Pawar, who was not the investigation officer, had abused and threatened him, which contributed to his distress. Abhay was the sole breadwinner of his family.
The police filed a suicide abetment case against Arohi and initiated an internal inquiry against Pawar. The division bench of the state human rights commission, comprising chairperson retd judge K K Tated and member retd judge MA Sayeed, issued a notice to police and directed compensation be paid in 6 weeks.
In a separate case last month, the commission had also directed the Mira-Bhyander Vasai-Virar poice to pay Rs 3 lakh compensation to Mohammad Ansari, who was assaulted by sub-inspector Rajshekhar Salgare at Manikpur police station in May.
